Go for the win
Why to never look to just cash in tournaments/go for the win (playing coin flips)
Why you should never look to squeak by and just receive the minimum cash in tournament poker is because if you look at the long run, you want to have tournament wins listed on your poker resume.
If you look to just cash in tournaments you will never build your poker bankroll enough where you can play whatever tournaments or games you want.
The best tournament players will cash in about one of every five tournaments they play. If you are just minimum cashing over and over it will be and endless cycle where you will never show enough profit to sustain a poker career.
How to go in for the win is right around the money bubble. Right around the tournament money bubble there will be players content to cash in the tournament because they have been sitting there for hours on end and want something to show for their hours of hard work.
How to win poker tournaments
You can exploit these players and run them over approaching the money if you change gears and pick on them consistently.
If you want to win tournaments you need to accumulate chips throughout the tournament.
That means at the beginning, the middle, and the end. The middle is the most important part of a tournament because most will lose focus after a few hours of playing and will start to make mistakes.
If you capitalize on their mistakes you will be in good shape approaching the end of a tournament.
When you should begin to play coin flips is also going to be right around the tournament money bubble. The blinds will be big enough and worth taking and if you have a hand like an ace king, it should never go in to the muck.
If you are heads up in a pot where someone jammed their whole stack in before the flop, take the chance with ace king and call them. Most of the time it will be a coin flip and other times you will be a big favorite.
To win tournaments, you have to win the times you showdown ace king in all-in situations. If you don’t play these hands and avoid coin flips you will most likely be out of the tournament and be forced to play a hand with less showdown value than ace king.
Also, looking at middle pocket pairs, these are hands you should look to get in to race situations with. The key is to not get it in where you are completely dominated with pair over pair spots, but if you pick wisely you will not be.
One spot that is ideal to see if you are in a coin flip situation is when a player in later position moves all-in.
If you have woken up with a hand like two eights, you may at first think fold, but what you should do is snap call. If someone is shoving their stack in from a position like the button, the range of hands they could have is all over the board.
Most times you will be a big favorite or at worst in a race situation, so, folding should not be one of the options you choose.
Play these hands and you will be rewarded in the long run with a tournament victory at some point. Never shy away from them and you can improve your tournament game.
